Bluetooth® connects your phone to your Ford SYNC® screen so you can make hands-free calls, stream music and use voice commands without picking up your phone. AutoNation Ford Panama City put together this guide to pair your phone in a few minutes. Watch the video, then follow the steps that match your Ford.
How to Set Up Bluetooth in Your Ford
Before you start
- Park your Ford and turn it on. Don't pair your phone while driving.
- Turn on Bluetooth in your phone's settings and keep your phone unlocked.
- Make sure your phone isn't already connected to another Bluetooth device, like headphones.
Pair your phone
- On the SYNC screen, touch Phone. If your screen shows a Settings or Home option first, start there and choose Phone.
- Select Add Phone. On some models this reads Add a Phone, Add Device or Add Bluetooth Device. SYNC is now discoverable and may show a code.
- On your phone, open Bluetooth settings and select SYNC from the list.
- Check that the code on your phone matches the code on the SYNC screen. If it does, select Pair on your phone and Yes on the SYNC screen. If the codes don't match, start the steps over.
- Allow access to your contacts and messages when your phone asks, so hands-free calling and texting work.
- When SYNC confirms the pairing, select Finish or Done. If SYNC offers to make your phone the primary phone, select Yes so it connects first.
Your phone and your Ford are now connected over Bluetooth. Menu names can differ by SYNC version and model year, so your owner's manual has the exact steps for your Ford.
Using Bluetooth in Your Ford
Once you're connected, press the voice button on your steering wheel or use the SYNC screen to:
- Make and receive hands-free calls
- Stream music, podcasts and audiobooks from your phone
- Hear and reply to text messages with your voice
Want your phone's apps on the screen too? Follow our Apple CarPlay setup guide or our Android Auto setup guide.
Delete or Switch a Phone
Open the Phone settings on the SYNC screen, find your phone in the list of paired devices and delete it. Then remove SYNC from the Bluetooth list on your phone. To switch phones, pair the new phone with the same steps above.

Bluetooth FAQs
How do I pair my phone to Bluetooth in my Ford?
Park your Ford, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, then touch Phone > Add Phone on the SYNC screen. Select SYNC from the Bluetooth list on your phone, confirm the code matches on both screens, then select Pair on your phone and Yes on the SYNC screen.
Why won't my phone connect to SYNC in my Ford?
Start with the basics. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, restart your phone and your Ford, and update your phone's software. If it still won't connect, delete SYNC from your phone's Bluetooth list, delete your phone from the SYNC screen, and pair again.
Why does my Ford show a code when I pair my phone?
The code confirms that your phone and your Ford are pairing with each other. Check that the code on the SYNC screen matches the code on your phone, then confirm on both. If the codes don't match, start the pairing steps over.
How many phones can I pair to my Ford?
You can pair several phones to SYNC, but one phone is active for calls at a time. If SYNC offers to make your phone the primary phone, select Yes so it connects first when you get in.
How do I delete a phone from my Ford?
Open the Phone settings on the SYNC screen, find your phone in the list of paired devices and delete it. Then remove SYNC from the Bluetooth list on your phone so the two forget each other before you pair again.
Why don't my contacts show up in my Ford?
Your phone has to give SYNC access to your contacts and messages. When your phone asks during pairing, allow it. If you missed the prompt, open your phone's Bluetooth settings for SYNC, turn on contact sharing and reconnect.
Do I need Bluetooth for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in my Ford?
On SYNC 3, CarPlay and Android Auto connect with a USB cable. On SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto start with a Bluetooth pairing. Pairing over Bluetooth also gives you hands-free calling and music without CarPlay or Android Auto.
Does Bluetooth use my data plan in my Ford?
Bluetooth calls and audio don't use mobile data. Apps that stream music or maps do use your phone's data plan, so carrier rates may apply.
